Learning and Growing at AS#1

At AS#1 classes are made of students from mixed age groups who are organized into learning teams. Classes are ungraded at our school, and test scores and grades aren’t used to label or assign value to children or their efforts. Literacy and writing, critical thinking and problem solving in math and sciences, cultural studies, leadership and community building are the core of our instruction. These subjects are taught in interdisciplinary project-based block classes called “Cores” that meet for 3-4 hours per day and all day on Fridays. The rest of the day includes physical education, arts, languages, service learning and an exciting variety of elective classes. To learn more about AS#1’s experiential learning focus, visit our Experiential Learning page.

Kayaking on Lake UnionAS#1 is a one of a kind adventure school, and the very best way to learn more is to visit. Staff, children and families are friendly and welcoming, so please do feel welcome to visit us and our classrooms. When you come you’ll meet other visitors here because many family members and community members often join us, adding their strengths and talents to our teaching and learning experiences.
