AS#1 Climbing Expo Coming in April

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Mark the Date!

What:  The AS #1 Annual Climbing Expo
When:  Wed. April 14th 6-8pm
Where:  AS #1 gym and lunchroom
Who: EVERYONE in the AS #1 Community!
Cost:  Donations for food and T-shirts requested, but not required…no one will be refused either, but our budget is more limited this year.

The Climbing Expo is our annual community celebration of the climbing program at AS #1.  Family and friends join students for a night of showing off climbing skills, belaying, food, fun, and T-shirts.

This year we have a special guest as Hooman Aprin has agreed to come back to share his slides and stories with the larger community.  Hooman is a world class alpine climber who led clients up Everest in ’90 and has climbed many other peaks in the Himalayas as well as working as a guide in Wyoming and Nepal.

We will also be serving food from the Nepal/Tibet region provided by the Everest Kitchen in Lake City.  Donations are requested, but not required.

Climbers will have all have the opportunity to order the annual Climbing Expo 2010 T-shirt. Again, donations are requested, but not required-this request comes as our budget is much more limited this year so we will only order the number/sizes that are needed.

Come and see the bar graph on the gym wall tracking our simulated climb to the Top of the World (as of this writing we’re at over 21,000ft!) and cheer the kids on as they continue towards their goal!

AS#1 7th and 8th Graders Discover Dance with PNB

Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010

The 7th and 8th grade students of AS #1 have begun the second phase of their DISCOVER DANCE residency with Pacific Northwest Ballet. Beginning in November, students learned dance concepts, steps, and choreographic principles that are now helping them create their dance for the final performance on April 24 at McCaw Hall. Working with Teaching Artist Rochelle Rapaszky, the students are beginning to formalize the work they’ve created. In January, the 7th and 8th graders have visited the home of Pacific Northwest Ballet on a field trip where they took class, learned about running a ballet company, viewed and learned about costumes up-close, and had an opportunity to watch professional dancers in class and ask them questions about their lives and career. In February, the students attended our EYES ON DANCE matinee performance of The Sleeping Beauty, and had an opportunity to see where they will be performing! We invite you to stop by a DISCOVER DANCE class at any time, and don’t forget to save the date for April 24, 2010- when the students perform at McCaw Hall!
